  • EMERGENCE Invades SXSW

Presenting DXSW (Detroit Hip Hop showcase) and The Revival: SXSW (Women in Hip Hop showcase).

EMERGENCE is presenting two groundbreaking showcases at the 2010 South By Southwest (SXSW) music festival in Austin: DXSW (Detroit Hip-Hop showcase) and The Revival: SXSW (Women in Hip-Hop showcase). Curated by Invincible, who will perform at both events, these showcases aim to build unity and a stronger spirit of cooperation within the music movements in which EMERGENCE is rooted.

These showcases are generously sponsored by SplinkMe.com, marking the launch of this innovative company and website which aims to link small businesses with musicians and other influencers towards successful sponsorships.

DXSW features a dozen of Detroit Hip-Hop's finest, headlined by the legendary Slum Village, in their first ever SXSW appearance. Black Milk will also be performing along with live musicians AB and Daru. Detroit is known internationally for its unique musical innovations, most recently spread by super-producer and artist Jay Dilla, who joined the ancestors nearly 5 years ago. Dilla's younger brother Illa J will be hosting the event along with Marv Won, with musical interludes provided by DJs/Producers House Shoes and 14KT.

The Revival: SXSW will highlight a wide spectrum of regions and styles throughout the women in Hip-Hop movement, and is headlined by veteran Philadelphia emcee Bahamadia making her SXSW premiere. Other performers featured include Tiye Phoenix, Chicago's own Psalm One, Toronto emcee Eternia, as well as Diamond, best known for her work with Crime Mob. The event will be filmed for a follow-up short documentary in EMERGENCE's The Revival series, which gives viewers a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the growing Women in Hip-Hop movement. The first documentary in The Revival series can be viewed here, with follow-up interviews with the featured artists here.

  • Metro Times: Invincible's "Motor City Five"

Metro Times Blowout-edition cover photo by Doug Coombe.

In anticipation of her headlining performance at the Blowout, the Metro Times did a quick five question interview with Invincible.

    INVINCIBLE

    1. What musical accomplishment of yours are you most proud of?
Completing and self-releasing my first album, ShapeShifters, independently, instead of signing a bullshit deal earlier on in my career. It was a longer scenic route but was worth it. I'm proud to be able to build off of that foundation as well as share the model I'm developing with other artists.

    2. Favorite local band/artist (other than yourself!)?
A tie between Underground Resistance and Slum Village

    3. What do the words "YouTube sensation" mean to you?
    T Baby's "It's So Cold In The D"

    4. Who is the greatest Detroit musical export of all time?
Stevie Wonder. Funkadelic, J Dilla, Aretha and Juan Atkins as runners-up.

    5. Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
Still living in Detroit while exploring parallel universes, taking quantum leaps both musically and with my communities.

Invincible plays Thursday, March 4, at midnight at the G of C Hall.

  • Real Detroit Weekly: Invincible is "Best Female Hip-Hop Artist"

Invincible was named "Best Female Hip-Hop Artist/Group" of 2010 in Real Detroit Weekly's annual "Real Best of Detroit" reader pole. Thanks to Real Detroit and to everyone who voted for Invincible!

    Here's the write-up:

    Best Female Hip-Hop Artist/Group: Invincible
Not too long ago, while blissfully driving through downtown Detroit, we heard this piece on Invincible on NPR. We subsequently drove past the building we were looking for when they played the beat to what we would learn later was her badass song “Shapeshifters” that was produced by Waajeed. We were mesmerized. This woman is powerful and undeniably owns her rhymes with a confidence of ownership on par with MCs like Black Thought, Ghostface and early Eminem. Experience her talent, power and gritty grace.

  • JAN 29: Invincible, One Be Lo, Paradime, S.U.N., Buff1, Gorilla Funk Mob, Yin in ANN ARBOR

On Friday January 29th, S.U.N. aka Santonio Hughbanks (organizer) will be bringing the Live Lyrics Reunion Concert in Ann Arbor at the legendary Blind Pig concert club. Ten years ago, the Live Lyrics showcase concert series was the launching pad for several artists’ careers in the world renowned Southeastern Michigan Hip Hop community.

Conceptually the show was built around Emcees asserting themselves and their music by performing with a live band. Live Lyrics showcased the talents of multiple artists who were up and coming in 1998-2000. Ten years later these artists constitute a who’s who of today’s most successful Michigan Hip Hop artists. S.U.N., OneBeLo, Paradime, Buff 1, Invincible, Athletic Mic League, along with bands like Funktelligence, & Phryme Numbers were all involved in the original shows. Instrumental in putting all of this together was S.U.N, who up to that moment in time had served as a mentor for many of these artists, and who again is bringing everybody back together for this special event.

Over the course of the last decade since the first Live Lyrics concert, many of these artists have traveled the world, winning over legions of fans, and selling 10’s of thousands of records. OneBeLo has gone on to become one of the best selling hip hop artists out of Michigan. Buff 1 has had a string of successful releases in the last 5 years, and has toured Europe and Australia extensively. Paradime has gone on to tour the world as Kid Rock’s DJ but more importantly, as a solo artist, solidified himself as one of Detroit's most touted emcees, and still holds the same respect 10 years later. Invincible has started Emergence Media, and become one of the most respected emcees the world over, earning endorsements from such luminaries as Talib Kweli. S.U.N has gone on to be recognized for his place in the pantheon of Michigan Hip Hop when the Metro Times named him among one of “only 15 artists of consummate influence in the hip hop branch of Detroit music” in their ‘Century of Sound’ illustration & cover story.

This event is sure to sell out, get there early, the bill is stocked from top to bottom.
